What to Do If Your Car Overheats on the A3 Near Petersfield

28/09/2026 · 5 min read

Driving up the A3 past Petersfield or tackling the long incline near Butser Hill puts extra strain on your car’s cooling system. If your temperature gauge starts creeping into the red or steam begins escaping from under the bonnet, taking quick, sensible action can mean the difference between a simple fix and a costly engine overhaul.

Here is a practical guide on what to do if your car starts overheating on the A3 or around our local Hampshire and West Sussex roads.

### 1. Pull Over Safely as Soon as Possible

The moment you notice the temperature rising or an engine temperature warning light illuminating, your priority is to get out of traffic safely.

* **Find a safe spot:** Use the nearest layby, emergency refuge area, or take the next exit (such as the A272 Petersfield junction or the South Harting turn-off). * **Turn off the engine:** Continuing to drive an overheating car—even for a mile or two—can cause the cylinder head to warp or the head gasket to blow. * **Turn on your hazard lights:** Make sure your vehicle is visible to passing traffic, especially on busier dual-carriageway stretches.

### 2. Turn the Heater on Full (If Traffic Prevents Pulling Over)

If you are stuck in slow-moving traffic on the A3 and cannot pull over immediately, switch your interior heater to maximum temperature and turn the fan on high. While uncomfortable in summer, this pulls heat away from the engine block into the cabin, which may buy you vital minutes to reach a layby.

### 3. Do NOT Open the Coolant Cap While Hot

This is critical: **never attempt to unscrew the pressure cap on the radiator or expansion tank while the engine is hot.** The system is under high pressure, and scalding coolant and steam will spray out, causing serious burns.

Wait at least 20 to 30 minutes for the engine to cool down completely before checking fluid levels under the bonnet.

### 4. Check for Visible Problems

Once the engine bay has cooled down:

* **Check the coolant reservoir:** Is the liquid level below the minimum mark? * **Look for leaks:** Is there bright green, pink, or blue fluid dripping underneath the car? * **Inspect the drive belts:** Is the belt driving the water pump snapped or loose?

If the coolant is low, you can top it up with a 50/50 mix of coolant and water (or plain water in an emergency) to help get you to a nearby garage. However, remember that coolant does not simply disappear—a low level always indicates a leak or an engine issue.

### When to Book Your Car in for Repairs

Even if your engine cools down and seems to run normally after a top-up, an overheating incident should never be ignored. Common causes include:

* Leaking radiator or perishing coolant hoses * A stuck thermostat * A failing water pump * A broken electric cooling fan

Driving with a compromised cooling system will eventually lead to major engine failure.
