Should I Use Premium Fuel in My Car?
01/10/2026 · 5 min read
Every time you pull up to the pumps in Petersfield, Midhurst, or along the A272, you face the same choice: standard or premium fuel? With premium petrol and diesel costing anywhere from 10p to 15p more per litre, it is natural to ask whether the higher price tag actually delivers real benefits for your car.
At Southern VSR Ltd, our workshop in West Harting regularly gets asked this question by local drivers. Here is our straight-talking guide to help you decide whether premium fuel is worth it for your vehicle.
### What Makes Premium Fuel Different?
Fuel labelled as "Premium" or "Super" differs in two main ways depending on whether your car runs on petrol or diesel:
- **Premium Petrol (E5 Super Unleaded):** Has a higher octane rating (usually 97 or 99 RON compared to 95 RON for standard E10). Octane measures how controlled the combustion process is inside your engine. - **Premium Diesel:** Contains a higher "cetane" rating and higher concentrations of detergent additives designed to strip away carbon deposits from fuel injectors and engine valves.
### Does Your Car Need Premium Petrol?
**1. High-Performance Vehicles** If you drive a performance car, hot hatch, or high-compression turbocharged engine, your vehicle manufacturer may specify 98+ RON fuel. Using standard petrol in these cars can lead to engine "knocking" (pre-ignition), reduced performance, and lower fuel efficiency because the engine computer has to adjust the ignition timing to protect itself. Always check the label inside your fuel filler cap.
**2. Standard Everyday Cars** If your handbook says standard 95 RON is fine, running on premium fuel won't magically double your horsepower. Modern engine management systems adjust to standard petrol without issue. However, running a tank of premium petrol every few months can still be beneficial because premium fuels contain cleaning detergents that help remove carbon build-up in fuel lines and injectors.
**3. Older & Classic Vehicles** Standard petrol in the UK is now E10 (containing up to 10% ethanol), which can degrade rubber hoses and seals in older vehicles. Premium unleaded is typically E5 (max 5% ethanol), making it a much safer option for classic cars stored around the South Downs villages.
### What About Premium Diesel?
For diesel drivers doing regular stop-start journeys around Chichester or Petersfield, carbon build-up in fuel injectors and Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) is a common issue. Premium diesel contains extra cleaning agents and anti-foaming detergents. Using a tank of premium diesel periodically can help clean the fuel system and keep the DPF regenerating smoothly, especially if your car covers a lot of short local miles.
### What Premium Fuel Cannot Fix
While premium fuel can clean minor deposits and improve engine smoothness slightly, it cannot repair mechanical faults. If your engine is misfiring, idling roughly, producing dark exhaust smoke, or displaying a Check Engine light, putting expensive fuel in the tank will not solve the underlying fault.
